A little over two weeks ago, my wife and I went with my friends to the Island of Mozambique. A small island in the North that used to be the Administrative capital of all trading made between Portugal, Africa and the Indies. No easy task, specially with the Dutch constantly trying to capture the island.
Anyway, currently the island is totally lost in time. The buildings are pretty much the same you find in old Europe, but here they've faced the passing of time and no maintenance. Mostly in ruins, they're still called home by the locals who've seized them as their own.
Most noticeable is the Arabian influence throughout the island. A small mosque here and there, no one with a western name or a true Portuguese accent, and creepily, no public lighting on the streets. After the first few steps around, you get used to it. A true ghost town, full of history and melancholy.
The program for the trip was to arrive there (after 6hours), wonder about the island with a camera on hand, get a local sailboat and get suntanned at a tropical beach somewhere, and get back to Maputo (10 hours!). All in three days!
